Dark rain clouds over the sea with sunlight breaking through on the Phu Quoc coast

Rainy-season stay: west, then east

Seven to ten nights between May and October, split between the north-west, for sunsets and spa afternoons, and the south-east coast near Bai Sao, where the sea is calmer in the south-west monsoon. Rooms cost less, showers come and go, and the plan has a dry option for every day.

From May to October Phu Quoc is in its rainy season. The national tourism authority describes it as rougher seas and short heavy showers, not days of constant rain. The south-west monsoon pushes bigger waves and murkier water onto the west coast, while east-coast beaches such as Bai Sao and Bai Khem become calm. Rooms are cheaper: one 2026 price survey says September and October rates can drop 40 to 50 percent.

This plan uses both facts. You start on the north-west coast, where the sunsets are and where the showers are easiest to wait out on a covered terrace, then move to the south-east coast for the swimming. Every day has a dry-weather and a wet-weather version, and nothing depends on a boat.

Day by day (7-night version)

Day 1

Arrive, drive to the north-west

Private car from PQC to Ong Lang or Cua Can, roughly 35 to 50 minutes by our planning estimate. If it is raining, the driver waits under cover with you before loading the bags.

Day 2

Watch the weather, learn the rhythm

Rainy-season showers on the island are often short and heavy. Swim only where the property says the water is safe that day; on the west coast in the monsoon, that can mean the pool rather than the sea. In June and July the sun sets at about 18:30, the latest of the year.

Day 3

Suoi Tranh stream morning

The stream at full flow, which it never reaches in the dry months

The rainy months are when Suoi Tranh, a forest stream about 9 km from Duong Dong, has the most water; the published season for it is May to November. Tickets are about 30,000 VND for adults. Your driver takes you in the morning and waits; the paths are short but slippery, so wear sandals with grip.

Day 4

Massage on a wet afternoon

A 60-minute massage booked for mid-afternoon, a good use of a wet hour. The published range for a classic 60-minute massage in island salons is about 300,000 to 500,000 VND.

Day 5

Move to the south-east coast

Check out late morning and drive south-east to a room near Bai Sao, about 25 km from Duong Dong. On the way, stop at a fish sauce producer: Phu Quoc fish sauce ferments in hardwood barrels for 12 to 15 months, and the visit is under a roof.

Day 6

Bai Sao early

Bai Sao is the island's most popular beach, so go before 09:00 on a weekday. In the monsoon months its water is usually calmer than the west coast's. Lifeguards are reported at peak hours in its flag-marked zone.

Day 7

Ham Ninh crab lunch, or a quiet day

If the weather is fair, take a ride to Ham Ninh fishing village on the east coast for lunch; the blue swimmer crab there is published at about 300,000 to 400,000 VND per kg depending on season. If it is wet, stay put.

Departure

The airport is closer from the south-east than from the north-west. Private car timed from your flight.

Ten nights

The 10-night version adds a day at each base. On the west side we add a morning at Ho Quoc Pagoda, which opens at 06:00; on the east side, a second Bai Sao morning.

Month by month in the wet season

MonthAverage rainRainy daysWhat we plan
Mayabout 281 mm19West-coast base still fine for the first days; east for swimming
Juneabout 382 mm21Split stay as above
Julyabout 419 mm22–23Split stay; watch for storm warnings
Augustabout 486 mmabout 24Wettest month; keep the stay short or lean east
Septemberabout 474 mmabout 23Lowest room prices; no boat days
Octoberabout 354 mm21–22Rain easing late in the month

The figures are long-term averages from a published climate table. A rainy day in that table means a day with measurable rain, not a day without sun. Phu Quoc sits deep in the Gulf of Thailand and is among the places in Vietnam least often hit directly by major storms, but July to September can bring storms with heavy rain and fairly strong wind. More detail is on Phu Quoc in the rainy season.

Boats, and why this plan has none

Boat trips to the southern islands are possible in the rainy months, but less reliable. From May, afternoons get choppier and operators move departures earlier; some routes are suspended in September, and An Thoi island-hopping is often unreliable in September and October. Island trips are running again after a July 2026 suspension, with stricter checks on registration, life jackets and loads.

We leave boats out of this plan. If you add one in May or June, the operator's captain and the port authorities decide on the day whether it sails. If they cancel for weather, we move it to another day or refund that line; agencies advise checking the forecast one to two days ahead in these months.

Price and what it includes

3 – 4 travellers, 7 or 10 nightsOn request
Family with children, 7 or 10 nightsQuoted per date and party size
Quoted per stay after you send dates, party size and the room you want. No fixed tariff exists because the room, the month and the number of nights decide most of the total. Confirm every figure before travel.

What the price includes

  • Seven or ten nights split between the north-west and the south-east coast
  • Private car from PQC, between the two bases, and back to PQC
  • Morning at Suoi Tranh with driver and entry ticket
  • Fish sauce producer visit on the transfer day
  • One 60-minute massage
  • A wet-weather alternative written for every day

What it does not include

  • Flights
  • Travel insurance (check it covers weather disruption)
  • Lunches, dinners and drinks
  • Boat trips of any kind
  • Grab rides to Ham Ninh or Bai Sao
  • Tips

Rainy-season room rates are the biggest saving in this plan; the pricing page explains how month affects the total. Booking steps are on how to book.

Pictures from the wet months

Heavy clouds over a rough grey sea on the west coast
Water running over rocks at Suoi Tranh stream in the forest
Calm pale water and white sand at Bai Sao on the south-east coast
Large wooden fermentation barrels in a fish sauce house
Steamed blue swimmer crabs on a plate at Ham Ninh
Rain falling past the open front of a beach café

Who this plan is not for

  • Anyone whose holiday depends on a boat trip to the southern islands.
  • Travellers who want to swim from a west-coast beach every day. In the monsoon the west coast is often too rough.
  • People who will be unhappy if some afternoons are lost to rain. July to September average 22 to 24 rainy days a month.
  • Anyone needing a fixed outdoor schedule, such as a wedding photo shoot on a set date.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Does it rain all day?

Usually not. The rainy season on Phu Quoc is described as short heavy showers with rougher seas. Some days stay grey; August and September have the most rainy days.

Why split the stay?

Because the south-west monsoon hits the west coast with bigger waves, while east-coast beaches like Bai Sao become calm. The west keeps the sunsets and quieter bays; the east gives you a swimmable sea.

Is it cheaper?

Rooms are. One 2026 survey reports September and October rates can drop 40 to 50 percent. Transfers, massages and meals cost about the same all year.

What if a storm is forecast?

We watch the forecast in the days before arrival and tell you if we think the dates should move. Once you are on the island, the property and your driver will tell you when to stay indoors.
