What Ong Lang actually is

Ong Lang (Ông Lang) is a bay, not a resort town. The road north from Duong Dong passes it; between the road and the sea are resorts and bungalow properties set in gardens, and the sand in front of them. Travel guides describe the beach as less visited than the long beaches further south, with calm turquoise water, a few local boats anchored near the shore and trees behind the sand.

The honest part is the rocks. Parts of the shore are stony, and more rock shows at low tide. That makes Ong Lang good for snorkelling-style pottering and poor for long barefoot runs. If you want a long straight beach, look at Cua Can instead. Several properties here are small: Chen Sea Resort lists 36 villas, and Mango Bay calls itself an eco-friendly bungalow resort. The bay also has larger resorts, so the feel depends on which stretch you choose.

How many nights, and why

Seven nights is the minimum we suggest. Ong Lang is a place to settle into a routine, and the routine takes two or three days to find: which stretch of sand is best at which tide, where to sit for sunset, which restaurant you like enough to return to. Fewer than five nights and you leave just as it starts working.

Beyond ten nights, the bay can start to feel small, which is why our two-week plan moves you north for the second week. The seven-night plan and the wellness week both use Ong Lang as their main base.

The dry season on Phu Quoc runs from November to April by the national tourism authority's definition, and the west coast is calm and clear while the north-east monsoon blows. From May to October the south-west monsoon turns the west coast rough. Chen Sea, on this bay, offers free non-motorised water sports from November to April and suspends them from May to October, which tells you what the water is like.

Getting there and getting around

Fly into Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC). The airport is about 20 to 30 minutes by car from Duong Dong, and Ong Lang is about 6 km beyond town. A Grab from the airport costs about 120,000 VND to Duong Dong by one published figure; a metered taxi from the airport into Duong Dong runs about 180,000 to 220,000 VND. Our stay plans use a private car booked in advance.

Once here, Grab is the simplest way into town: about 80,000 VND from Duong Dong to Ong Lang, with short rides in town at 30,000 to 60,000 VND. Taxis cost roughly double the Grab rate. Scooters rent for about 150,000 to 250,000 VND a day, and you need a 1968-convention International Driving Permit with your home licence to ride legally.

Daily needs: market, shops, clinic

There is no large market in the bay itself. Duong Dong market, open 05:00 to 19:00, is the nearest for fresh fish, fruit and household goods; seafood is best between 06:00 and 09:00. For an evening out, the night market on Bach Dang street opens at 17:00 and is busiest from 19:00 to 21:00.

For health care, Phu Quoc General Hospital in Duong Dong is listed as open 24 hours, and several private clinics in town keep daytime hours; one clinic chain lists 07:00 to 19:00 daily. The Vinmec international hospital is further north in the Bai Dai area. All of these are a car ride from Ong Lang, not a walk. Pack any regular medicines for the whole stay.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Is Ong Lang too far from Duong Dong?

No. It is about 6 km, and a Grab costs about 80,000 VND. It is close enough for a dinner in town and far enough that the night market's noise does not reach the bay.

Can you swim at Ong Lang?

Yes, in the dry season, from the sandier stretches. Parts of the shore are rocky, more so at low tide; reef shoes help.

Is there a supermarket nearby?

Not in the bay. For a full shop, go to Duong Dong; the market there opens at 05:00 and closes at 19:00. Ask your property where the nearest minimart is.

Is Ong Lang good for sunsets?

Yes. It faces west over the sea. Sunset comes between about 17:40 in November and about 18:31 in July.
