Choosing a base on the quiet coast

Three areas on the north-west coast, compared for what matters on a stay of 7 to 14 nights: noise after dark, distance to a market and a hospital, room prices and the months when the sea is calm.

All three are on the west coast, which means sunsets over the sea and calm water in the dry season, and bigger waves with murkier water from May to October. For the wet months, the east coast around Bai Sao is the better swimming base; see Phu Quoc in the rainy season.

01

Ong Lang

The closest quiet bay to town. Calm, rocky in places, with bungalow resorts along the shore. Read about Ong Lang.

02

Cua Can and Vung Bau

A longer beach, a river mouth for kayaking, a fishing village, and the crescent of Vung Bau to the north. Read about Cua Can.

03

Ganh Dau

The north-west tip: a small cove, the stilt village of Rach Vem, and the island's international hospital nearby. Read about Ganh Dau.

Areas we do not use as a base

Duong Dong is the island's town. It has the biggest market, open 05:00 to 19:00, the night market on Bach Dang street from 17:00 to 22:00, and the general hospital. It is a good place for a morning or an evening, and a practical base if you want to walk everywhere, but it is not quiet. Typical doubles there cost about 350,000 to 800,000 VND.

Bai Truong (Long Beach), more than 20 km of sand south of Dinh Cau, is lined with large resorts. Bai Sao, about 25 km from Duong Dong in the south, has calm water and is the island's most visited beach; we use it for day visits and as the second base in the rainy-season stay, when the east coast is calmer than the west.

How to choose in three questions

  1. When are you going? November to April, any of the three. May to October, split the stay with the east coast.
  2. How often will you go into town? Every other day, choose Ong Lang. Once a week, Cua Can. Rarely, Ganh Dau.
  3. What do you need nearby? If a hospital close by matters, Ganh Dau is nearest the international hospital and Ong Lang is nearest Duong Dong's hospital and clinics.

If you are still unsure, the stay plans show which area each plan uses, and the daily costs page compares what a day costs from each base.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Which area is quietest?

Cua Can and the Chua Vic side of Ganh Dau are the furthest from traffic and nightlife. Ong Lang is quiet too but closer to town. All three have some resort construction somewhere along the coast, so we check the property's surroundings before booking.

Which area suits families?

Cua Can has the longest sandy beach of the three. None has a reported lifeguard service, so families who want one should consider Bai Truong or Bai Sao, where flag-marked zones with lifeguards at peak hours are reported.

Can we stay in Duong Dong and still have a slow holiday?

Yes, if you choose a room away from the night market and the main roads. You gain walking access to shops and food and lose the quiet beach on your doorstep.
