Cửa Cạn and Vũng Bầu: river, sand and space
North of Ong Lang, Cua Can has about 3 km of beach, a river mouth with kayaks and a fishing village. Vung Bau, further north, is a crescent bay with resorts and a golf course opened in 2024 behind part of the shore.

What these two places are
Cua Can (Cửa Cạn) was a coastal commune in the north-west before Phu Quoc became a special zone of An Giang province on 1 July 2025; it is now part of the special zone. The Cua Can river runs gently into the sea here, and the river-mouth sandbar is one of the island's listed beaches. Agency guides describe the beach as natural and unspoiled, about 3 km long, with a fishing village where visitors can try rowing a round basket boat.
Vung Bau (Vũng Bầu) is the crescent-shaped bay between Ong Lang and Bai Dai. It is not empty: Fusion Resort opened here in 2017 with 97 thatched pool villas, and in October 2024 an 18-hole golf course of more than 65 ha opened beside Vung Bau beach. If quiet is the priority, ask which side of the bay a room faces before you book. We do.

How many nights, and why
Seven nights or more. Cua Can is further from town than Ong Lang, so you go into Duong Dong less, and the stay works best when you stop planning trips out at all. A week gives you time for a kayak morning, a basket-boat try at the fishing village and several days of walking the long beach.
Cua Can is the second-week option in our two-week long stay, and a base for the seven-night plan when you prefer a long beach to a rocky bay. It is also an option for the wellness week: one resort on the Mong Tay peninsula in Cua Can lists daily hatha and restorative yoga.

When to go
| Period | Conditions | Rain |
|---|---|---|
| Late October – mid-May | Dry season by the agency guide; calm sea, pleasant weather | About 27–164 mm a month from November to April |
| May – October | South-west monsoon; west coast rougher, murkier water | About 281–486 mm a month |
| December – February | Peak rates, 30–50% above other months | Lowest rainfall |
Agency guides put the best time for Cua Can at late October to mid-May, a slightly longer window than the national tourism authority's November to April for the whole island. Kayaking on the river still works on calm mornings in the wet season, but sea swimming on this coast is often poor from May to October.

Getting there
From PQC, drive to Duong Dong (about 20 to 30 minutes by car) and continue north past Ong Lang to the Cua Can bridge. The road onward to Ganh Dau, about 30 km from Duong Dong in total, passes through. Grab works here; the published fare to Ong Lang is about 80,000 VND, and Cua Can is a little further.
Inside the area you can walk the beach, cycle on the quieter roads, or use Grab for anything further. A car with driver for a full day costs about 1,500,000 to 2,000,000 VND by published figures, which only makes sense for a day of errands or a trip across the island.

Things to do that stay slow
- Kayak on the river. About 80,000 to 100,000 VND per person per boat by a recent agency figure. Go in the morning, before the heat.
- Basket boat at the fishing village. Visitors can try rowing a round thuyền thúng.
- Walk the beach. About 3 km of sand, enough for a daily walk at sunrise or before sunset.
- Eat at the market. Cua Can market sells fresh seafood and local vegetables to the people who live here; it is the place to try what the coast eats.
- Sunset. The coast faces west; sunset comes between about 17:40 and 18:31 depending on the month.

Daily needs and costs
Cua Can market covers fresh food. For a pharmacy run, a bank or a larger shop, go to Duong Dong. The nearest hospitals are Phu Quoc General Hospital in Duong Dong, listed as open 24 hours, and the Vinmec international hospital to the north in the Bai Dai area, which has an emergency department. Both are a drive.
Rooms in Cua Can run about 400,000 to 1,000,000 VND a night in one 2026 survey, cheaper than Ong Lang at the top end. Meals and rides cost the same as elsewhere on the west coast: about 350,000 to 600,000 VND a day per person for mid-range eating. See daily costs for the full table.

Common questions
Questions travellers ask most
Is Cua Can quieter than Ong Lang?
Generally yes, because it is further from Duong Dong. It also has a longer beach. The trade-off is a longer ride for shopping and medical care.
Can we kayak in the rainy season?
On calm mornings, yes, on the river. Sea conditions on the west coast are rougher from May to October, so stay on the river and ask locally.
Is Vung Bau the same as Cua Can?
They are neighbours on the same coast. Vung Bau is the crescent bay between Ong Lang and Bai Dai; Cua Can has the river mouth and a longer straight beach.
Where is the nearest hospital?
Duong Dong has the general hospital, listed as open 24 hours, and the Vinmec international hospital is north in the Bai Dai area. Both need a car.
